Meta keywords are an SEO Consulting dream. Even in the age of the content oriented search engine algorithm, a well rounded set of keywords will help a lot. So often, this never gets done on new websites.

Similar to meta descriptions, meta keywords are another meta tag recognized by the search engines. Instead of sentences, meta keywords are merely a listing of the important keywords for a page. Ideally, words and phrases listed in the meta keywords should also appear multiple times in the text content of that page. This particular meta tag has been extremely abused by optimizers stuffing hundreds and even thousands of words into the tag, whether relevant to

the text content of the page or not. Because of this, search engines do not grant this tag much weight anymore, if any, in ranking the page. However, they do still read the tag as text and it is helpful if the content of the keyword meta tag and the content on the page are closely related. Google seems to ignore this tag, however there is some evidence that Yahoo and other smaller search engines pay a bit of attention to it.

I recommend that the total number of meta keywords be two or three keywords or key phrases per page, separated by commas and spaces. • More is not necessarily better. The more disparate the keywords, the lower the potential page ranking. Don’t water down your most important keywords by including less important ones with it. • Use keyword phrases that are also used in the copy of the page, the title tag, meta description, and other tags. If a key phrase is not mentioned anywhere on the page, it should not be included as a meta keyword. Remember relevance! • Don’t forget plurals, assuming people are searching both variations. • If the website is targeting users in a specific geographic location, be sure to include the location in the keyword meta tag as well as in the text content of the page. Example: “Keyword, Keyword, Keyword, Sydney, Australia”

Headings are an SEO Specialist’s friend. So many people fail to make use of this simple yet effective way to add SEO ranking to their website. Here is the issue.

Headings are read by search engine robots as “important text” to help identify the quality information contained on a website. When you look at the HTML code, these headings are identified with

In most cases, search engine results are greatly affected by what is in the page title. The page title itself is usually displayed in the search results as the “title” for the site listed. So, you may want to follow some simple rules about how to do page titles like quality SEO Firms.

• Don’t use more then two key phrases in your Page Title. This is not the place to cram keywords.

• Start with the Most important keywords for your website.

PR Ranking is not what it used to be for the SEO Expert or the DIY Webmaster looking to increase traffic to a website. A good Page Rank used to be a pretty good sign that a website had solid links to it. That has changed.

Now, Page Rank may not be the best thing to consider, when looking for links for your website. Content is now very important. If you website has lot of backlinks, like a so called web farm, there may not be much value in adding it to your website, as the website is essentially nothing but web links.

The better links for outbound purposes come from quality content sites, blogs that are popular for your topic, and sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, etc., that are designed to help people find quality content. Those are the type of sites you need to add for outbound links.

If you want to be in a pure link farm type directory listing, I recommend using someone like a Yellow Pages.com, where people will be expecting to get links to needed information and services. Otherwise, make good choices about links to PR Rated sites.

SEO consulting firms are bracing for new Google algorithm changes, as annouced on the official Google Blog for SEO. Over the next couple of issues, we want to talk about some of those changes.

LESS EMPHASIS ON THE HTML TITLE

The titles of your web pages will be getting less emphasis than in the past. With some new snippet technology going into place, Google may use some of the content is takes for your website, and use that in the overall title for searches. This may be done because Google may think it can come up with a better title for the content. It will be more important than ever to keep titles relevant to the content. Here is the piece from the Google blog:

“Snippets with more page content and less header/menu content: This change helps us choose more relevant text to use in snippets. As we improve our understanding of web page structure, we are now more likely to pick text from the actual page content, and less likely to use text that is part of a header or menu.” Taken from Google Blog.

So, keyword cramming in titles will need to give away to relevant content. I still think you need to keep keywords in your titles. Just make sure your titles accurately summarize the material, less Google change your imformation.

One piece of information that is often overlooked in good search engine optimization is that SEO professional services use unique images for their websites. Over time, various software technologies have made it easy to capture images from the web. So, it easy easy to find examples of unique images that are links to sites all over the web.

In time, the major search engines are going to give less credit for search engine optimization links in these images, if they are not unique. One of the easiest things to do is contract with a graphics designer to get you new images every so often. One of my favorite places to find this type of help is Elance.com. (Not a plug for them, just a good place to get help).

Another option is to take your own pictures. Those type of relevant images will get credit in search, when you link your website or add keywords into the description and name of the image.

So, break out the digital camera. Better yet, carry your iPhone or Android with you everywhere.

Last week we talked about SEO relevance. We discussed how important good content is to overall search engine optimization. This week, I want to talk about how an SEO Expert uses SEO importance to help balance the whole equation.

By SEO importance, we mean how important is your website in the mind of the public? Another way to phrase the question is: “how popular is your website?”

It takes both concepts to make a website work in today’s world. An SEO Expert today, then, has quite the challenging job. However, there are some metrics that can be used to help with analysis of the popularity of a website.

In days past, “Page Rank” was considered the utmost qualifier of good. That is simply not the case anymore. Now, the search engines use a more subjective popularity factor in their rankings. In order to battle this issue, many people turn to so-called link farms to help them get better ratings. In today’s world, link farms can still get a good rating, if they keep good content on their site also. An example of that is the online yellow pages. The problem is, the backlink credit does not happen any more for link farms. It may help the yellow pages, but may not help you.

For better links, you need academic sources, and trusted high quality content sites to link to you. If a good SEO Expert with a high ranking site links to this article, for example, I will get better credit. A link farm of good SEO sites just wont help, because the sole purpose of the site is to give people lots of links to other websites. You have to think balance.

In today’s world, Alexa offers the average SEO Joe a good way to rate popularity. Signing up your website for an Alexa ranking will give you a metric to use.
